Abra: The provincial government of Abra called for heightened vigilance against dengue through massive cleaning drives to destroy mosquito breeding sites. "The provincial health office is here to help address the problem but we need the cooperation of everyone in cleaning their surroundings, and destroying the mosquito breeding grounds," Dr. Frances Marie Alexis Gasa, Provincial Health Officer, said in an interview Wednesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Gasa urged residents to observe the 4Ts - 'taob', 'taktak', 'tuyo', and 'takip', as well as the 4S - search and destroy, self-protection, seek early consultation, and say yes or support to fogging but only in hotspot areas with rising cases to stop an impending outbreak. Abra Vice Governor Anne Bersamin on Tuesday encouraged residents to participate in regular community and household clean-up drives during an information and education campaign in Bucay, which has recorded the highest number of dengue cases in the province.
From January to August 2026, Abra recorded 645 dengue cases across 26 of its 27 municipalities. Bucay had the most cases with 98, followed by Pilar with 92, Bangued with 76, and La Paz with 60. Three people have died from the disease, including two in Pilar. Pilar town Mayor Tyrone Baro±a stated that the municipal government has secured medicines and other supplies and ordered the emergency purchase of fogging and misting machines.
"To address and prevent this disease entails self-discipline, let us help each other, do not just rely on the government because everyone has the responsibility to clean and make himself and his family safe," Baro±a said in a separate interview. Meanwhile, Bucay town Mayor Jaja Bernos ordered all 21 barangays to conduct simultaneous and regular clean-up drives. Health authorities are also conducting larval surveillance in areas with clusters of cases to eliminate mosquito larvae before they mature and spread the disease.
