Legazpi city: Senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Albay, a province frequently impacted by natural disasters, have been equipped with essential knowledge and skills to ensure their safety during such events.
According to Philippines News Agency, Eden Flores, regional head of the National Commission for Senior Citizens, emphasized the importance of the forum in preparing vulnerable groups for emergencies. Flores highlighted that the event is particularly crucial for areas like Albay and the Bicol region, which are prone to typhoons, floods, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. The partnership with SM Cares has provided an invaluable opportunity for senior citizens and PWDs to enhance their preparedness for emergencies.
The forum featured speakers from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, focusing on disaster preparedness strategies for earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions. Participants, like Vicente Realis, a 46-year-old polio survivor from San Francisco, Legazpi City, shared how the event equipped him with practical skills to respond to emergencies effectively. He expressed gratitude for the practical experiences shared during the forum, which taught him crucial actions to take during calamities.
Francis Lumerio, a 24-year-old visually impaired participant from Alobo, Daraga, attended a demonstration on earthquake response. He appreciated the opportunity, stating that he gained valuable knowledge on how to evacuate independently during a tremor, which boosted his confidence in handling such situations.
Edgiene Perino, a 72-year-old from Barangay 13, highlighted the significance of the activity in providing vital information for senior citizens. She noted that the knowledge gained would not only benefit her but also her family, allowing them to remain alert and prepared for emergencies, especially considering the impacts of climate change.
Hendrick Jefferson Ung, assistant manager of SM City Legazpi, emphasized the importance of empowering vulnerable groups through annual forums on skills and training for disaster preparedness. He stated that the goal is to boost their confidence and ensure they feel supported during challenging times.
