Almost 2.3 Million Passengers Utilize Philippine Ports During Holy Week Surge

Manila: The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) reported a significant increase in passenger traffic at its ports nationwide during the Holy Week, with nearly 2.3 million passengers recorded between April 12 and 20.

According to Philippines News Agency, PPA General Manager Jay Santiago announced that the recorded number of 2,291,666 passengers marks a 37.14 percent increase from the previous year's figure of 1,670,984 during the same period. Santiago attributed this rise to the overlap of Holy Week and the summer vacation, alongside successful promotions of local tourist destinations.

The Port Management Offices (PMOs) with the highest passenger numbers included PMO Batangas, PMO Panay/Guimaras, PMO Mindoro, PMO Negros Oriental/Siquijor, and PMO Bohol. Santiago noted that these PMOs handled increased passenger throughput effectively, especially on peak travel days like Holy Wednesday and Holy Thursday.

Santiago expressed gratitude to port stakeholders, government agencies, and passengers for their cooperation, contributing to the success of the Holy Week operations. He acknowledged the joint efforts of port workers and partners in the maritime industry, such as shipping lines, and government agencies, as well as the traveling public for their choice of seaports as a transport means.

While commending the operations, Santiago recognized areas needing improvement, particularly in managing long queues at select terminals. He emphasized the agency's commitment to enhancing coordination with shipping lines, reviewing port traffic management plans, and implementing digital solutions like the Electronic Terminal Management System. This initiative is a priority for Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, who aims for it to be operational by the end of the year.
