Antique: The Antique provincial government, through its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and Sacada Desk, is set to provide assistance to sugar migrant workers who may be displaced by the Kanlaon volcano eruption.
According to Philippines News Agency, PDRRM officer Broderick Train mentioned in an interview that the situations of sacadas, who are currently working in the Negros Island Region (NIR), are being closely monitored. As of now, none of the workers have requested assistance. However, he indicated that coordination could be established with the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officers in Antique or the Sacada Desk for support if needed.
Train noted that with the ongoing unrest of the Kanlaon volcano, there might be sacadas requiring help. Sacada Desk officer Randy Ardeno, in a separate interview, stated that many sacadas working in sugar fields in La Carlota, La Castellana, and other affected areas have already returned to Antique.
"Our sacadas go to NIR during the harvest season," Ardeno explained, pointing out that the harvest season lasted from November 2024 until April this year. The sugar migrant workers from Antique are managed by 96 contractors, which could explain why no displaced sacada has been reported.
The Department of Labor and Employment Antique provincial office has registered 3,000 sugar migrant workers from the province.
