Jakarta: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) may soon begin discussions on Papua New Guinea's application to join the regional bloc, as shared by Sidharto R. Suryodipuro, Director General for ASEAN Cooperation at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.
According to Philippines News Agency, Papua New Guinea has formally submitted its application for ASEAN membership. The decision-making process will rely on a consensus among current ASEAN countries. Suryodipuro mentioned that Papua New Guinea's path to membership might mirror that of Timor-Leste's, emphasizing that no amendments to the ASEAN Charter are necessary since the charter already includes 'location in the recognized geographical region of Southeast Asia' as a membership criterion.
Suryodipuro highlighted that geographical definitions are not strictly bounded, noting the proximity of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. During the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in May 2025, President Prabowo Subianto supported Papua New Guinea's bid to join ASEAN. He stated that Papua New Guinea has shown interest in joining the bloc and emphasized the importance of a united ASEAN amid global geopolitical uncertainties.
However, ASEAN Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn advised a cautious approach, emphasizing the need for consensus among the 11 member states and consideration of the ASEAN Charter. ASEAN currently includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
