ASEAN Foundation Targets 17,500 Philippine MSMEs for AI Training

Manila: About 17,500 Philippines-based micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are set to be enrolled in the two-year AI (artificial intelligence) for MSME Advancement in ASEAN (AIM ASEAN) program beginning this November.

According to Philippines News Agency, the ASEAN Foundation announced that nine Southeast Asian organizations have been chosen to lead the domestic implementation of the program, with the impact enterprise Limitless Lab assisting MSMEs in the Philippines. The beneficiaries will include enterprises from sectors such as retail, agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

The program aims to benefit approximately 100,000 MSMEs across the region. It will be carried out with support from the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) through the AI Opportunity Fund: Asia Pacific, and backed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The ASEAN Foundation emphasized that small businesses are integral to Southeast Asia's economy, but many risk being left behind in the digital age, particularly in AI adoption for business growth.

Training sessions will focus on practical AI applications, such as streamlining operations, enhancing online sales, and improving financial management, enabling MSMEs to leverage AI technology effectively in their daily operations. This initiative aligns with ASEAN Vision 2045, which seeks a stronger, more connected, and inclusive regional economy.

Naina Subberwal Batra, CEO of AVPN, highlighted the importance of building an AI-ready workforce, stating that it is a shared responsibility among governments, businesses, and impact organizations. Through the AI Opportunity Fund, AVPN aims to ensure that AI upskilling is relevant and scalable by working with local impact partners. This effort will help catalyze a digital transition, ensuring all workers benefit as Southeast Asia progresses toward an AI-enabled economy.
