Canlaon city: At least two barangays (villages) within the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) of Mt. Kanlaon in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, experienced ashfall following the volcano's eruption early Sunday evening, officials reported Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Seth Bariga, the Canlaon City information officer, confirmed that ashfall was reported in Barangays Pula and Mabigo. Bariga noted that moderate ashfall was recorded in these barangays, marking the first such occurrence in Canlaon City following recent volcanic eruptions of Kanlaon.

Typically, after an eruption, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issues warnings of ashfall drifting toward the southwest, often impacting parts of Negros Occidental. However, the advisory on Sunday evening indicated that the ashfall was moving southeast and northeast.

Bariga stated that half of Barangays Mabigo and Pula are located inside the four-kilometer PDZ, and residents in these areas have not returned to their homes and farms since last year. The remaining portions of the villages fall within the extended six-kilometer PDZ, where residents were advised to take precautions against ashfall.

While the moderate ashfall does not necessitate evacuation, residents have been advised to wear masks or damp face cloths to prevent upper respiratory illnesses. A forest fire on the Canlaon City side of the volcano naturally extinguished itself on Monday morning. Firefighters and emergency responders are discouraged from entering the PDZ due to potential dangers.

The city government has assured that it is prepared to address any medical needs of residents arising from the ashfall.
