Ateneo Coaches Banned from UAAP Following Dipaculao Drowning Incident

Manila: The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has imposed a ban on all members of the Ateneo de Manila University coaching staff who were present during the team building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, where men's basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili tragically drowned on June 8. The ban is effective immediately and extends to all UAAP-related activities, as announced by the collegiate league.

According to Philippines News Agency, the UAAP's decision is a preemptive measure aimed at maintaining the integrity of the ongoing investigation into the incident. The league emphasized the importance of transparency and due process as they examine the facts surrounding the tragedy. While the UAAP did not specify which coaches are affected, it is reported that former head coach Tab Baldwin and assistants Dean Casta±o, Jon Jacinto, and Sandro Soriano were present in Dipaculao. Baldwin has since resigned, as well as team manager Epok Quimpo.

The incident occurred when Baterbonia, 18, and Adili, 21, were swept away by large waves from the Pacific Ocean. The UAAP has given Ateneo until July 15 to complete its investigation into the incident, after which the league will make its final decision.

The UAAP highlighted the need for a thorough evaluation of the actions of the university and those involved before passing judgment. The league stated that accountability will be based on a comprehensive and impartial investigation, adhering to its governing rules and regulations. Any individuals found responsible for wrongdoing will face consequences under league regulations.

Potential sanctions include a full-season ban across all sports, which could prevent the Blue Eagles from defending their titles in men's swimming and collegiate badminton events.
