Bacolod: Officials of Bacolod City and the neighboring municipality of Murcia express optimism as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the inspection of the PHP1.5-billion Sum-ag Water Treatment Plant in Barangay Salvacion. The development promises long-term water security for the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos was accompanied by Bacolod City Lone District Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, Mayor Greg Gasataya, Mayor Gerardo Victor Rojas, and Ryan Yapkianwee, president and CEO of Tubig Pilipinas, which operates the project through its subsidiary, Bacolod Bulk Water Inc. (BBWI). The facility supplies treated bulk water to Bacolod City, aiming to ensure a more reliable water supply.

The Sum-ag Water Treatment Plant, funded through shareholder equity with contributions from Climate Fund Managers and the Development Bank of the Philippines, employs water treatment and automation technology from Israel-based Watermatic International. The plant sources surface water from the Sum-ag River, with a capacity of up to 75 million liters of potable water per day. This is expected to benefit around 100,000 households or approximately 500,000 residents in Bacolod and neighboring Murcia.

Benitez highlighted that as one of the largest water supply investments in the Visayas, the plant is crucial for meeting Bacolod's water demands. He emphasized that water security encompasses not only infrastructure but also resilience in the face of climate change and urban growth, commending Tubig Pilipinas Group's commitment to the region.

Mayor Rojas of Murcia noted the town's strategic position and abundant surface water resources, which establish it as a key water hub in Negros Occidental. He stressed that the project is about ensuring access to clean, safe, and sustainable water. The partnership with Tubig Pilipinas and BBWI aims to supply water to Murcia during times of need, reflecting the inclusive and sustainable progress envisioned under Bagong Pilipinas.
