Bangkok: Bacolod City is receiving significant backing in its pursuit to be recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. Negros Occidental 3rd District Representative Javier Miguel Benitez, who chairs the House special committee on creative industries, has pledged his support for the city's bid, emphasizing the initiative's deep-rooted significance for Bacolod.
According to Philippines News Agency, Benitez expressed his commitment to the cause in a Facebook post, asserting that the bid is a genuine representation of Bacolod's culinary heritage, ready to be showcased globally. During the city's 88th Charter Day awarding ceremony held at the Bacolod City Government Center, Benitez highlighted his plans to involve the Philippine Creative Industries Development Council in Bacolod's efforts, recognizing the city's potential in elevating its local cuisine, such as the iconic chicken inasal, to international prominence.
Benitez underscored the importance of local involvement in determining Bacolod's creative future, linking the city's UNESCO bid with legislative support for technical assistance, programs, and funding. He emphasized that Bacolod should not pursue this ambition in isolation. Notably, Iloilo City currently holds the title as the Philippines' first UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
The call for collaboration extended to fostering stronger relations between Bacolod City and Negros Occidental. Benitez, alongside Mayor Greg Gasataya, stressed that such unity is crucial for the collective progress of the city, the province, and the Negros Island Region. Gasataya reiterated this sentiment, highlighting the mutual benefits of the city's efforts for the broader region.
The Charter Day event also saw the city government honor notable citizens with the Ang Banwahanon Award. Recipients included Larry Carumba, an internationally acclaimed visual artist recognized for his humanitarian-themed works and charitable contributions, and Richard Jeric Chua, a civic leader lauded for his efforts in education and community development, particularly benefiting underserved children and families.
The Ang Banwahanon Award represents Bacolod's highest civic honor, celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions to the city's cultural, educational, social, sports, and economic spheres.
