Batangas: The search for missing 'sabungeros' (cockfight enthusiasts) in Taal Lake has been suspended due to adverse weather conditions, as announced by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
According to Philippines News Agency, DOJ spokesperson Mico Clavano informed reporters that Coast Guard underwater operations utilizing technical divers and remotely operated vehicles have been temporarily halted. The decision was made due to continuous rainfall and runoff from a nearby river leading to elevated turbidity levels, which have significantly reduced underwater visibility and rendered diving operations unsafe.
The search operation commenced on July 10 after whistleblower Julie Patidongan alleged that over 100 bodies of sabungeros were disposed of in the lake. Recently, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla confirmed that technical divers recovered two sacks containing human remains.
Justice Secretary Remulla expressed confidence in the knowledge possessed by Patidongan about the missing sabungeros following a meeting with him. Remulla stated, "We're still gathering information and clarifications about everything. He knows a lot of details."
In parallel with the search, investigators are collecting DNA samples from the relatives of the missing sabungeros to establish a comprehensive DNA bank. This initiative aims to ensure proper identification of the e-sabong victims. The DOJ has also indicated plans to seek assistance from Argentina, known for its expertise in identifying the "desaparecidos" during the country's military dictatorship.
