Baguio Advances Electric Jeepney Initiative Following Successful Pilot Run

Baguio: The city government of Baguio is actively moving forward with its electric jeepney project after a successful pilot run in the central business district, which demonstrated minimal battery consumption even when carrying 22 passengers.

According to Philippines News Agency, Engineer Richard Lardizabal from the City Engineering and Transportation Management Division reported that the e-jeepney completed a 7-kilometer loop with 10 stops in 54 minutes and 50 seconds, utilizing only 5 percent of its battery capacity. Lardizabal noted that the results indicate the feasibility of the e-vehicle for central business district routes and its potential to support the City's Smart Mobility Program.

The test run was conducted under normal traffic conditions and provided free rides to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and students. Additional test runs are planned to further refine passenger load and scheduling efficiency, as part of the city's efforts to enhance public transportation.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong has been an advocate for smart mobility solutions that prioritize convenience and environmental protection. He expressed hope for the success of the e-vehicle on Baguio's terrain, aiming for improved air quality by reducing vehicle emissions.

The current six-month trial run builds on previous initiatives, such as the use of e-jeepneys as free loop shuttles at Camp John Hay, reflecting the city's commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.
