Baguio Residents Advised to Monitor Diet During Festive Season

Baguio: The City Health Services Office has issued a reminder to residents to be mindful of their dietary choices during the festive season's numerous parties. Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes, the city health officer, emphasized the importance of enjoying Christmas celebrations without compromising health.

According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Brillantes stressed the need for party organizers to include healthier options like fruits and vegetables in their menus, avoiding foods high in oil and salt. She also advised that parties should not extend too late into the night. Brillantes highlighted the risk of hypertension, particularly for those already diagnosed with the condition, due to unhealthy food and lifestyle choices.

Data from the City Health Services Office indicates there were 10,705 reported cases of hypertension in the city from January to September, with a rate of 2,775.90 per 100,000 population. Hypertension has surpassed acute upper respiratory tract infections as the leading cause of morbidity in Baguio. It is considered a lifestyle disease, with factors including sedentary behavior, poor diet, stress, and insufficient physical activity.

Brillantes stated that with hypertension becoming the top health concern, the city is adjusting its programs, funding, and priorities to address this issue. As part of these efforts, Baguio has launched Project ManEkJad, a campaign encouraging residents to walk and bike to work or school. The project name combines the Ibaloi words 'Manekad' (to walk) and 'Mansekjad' (to bike), promoting these activities as accessible and cost-effective forms of exercise.
