Manila: House prosecution adviser and spokesperson Robert Ace Barbers praised National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Senior Agent John Mark Calilung for maintaining composure and credibility during an intense cross-examination by the defense panel in the ongoing Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
According to Philippines News Agency, Barbers stated that the defense's extensive questioning did not undermine Calilung's credibility or the substance of his testimony regarding the grave threats charges. Instead, the NBI agent consistently provided clear, direct, and evidence-based responses that bolstered the integrity of the bureau's investigation.
Barbers highlighted Agent Calilung's professionalism and competence throughout the proceedings, noting that despite the defense's repeated attempts to cast doubt, Calilung remained steadfast, relying on facts and evidence gathered during the investigation. Barbers emphasized the importance of rigorous scrutiny by the defense, viewing it as an opportunity to showcase the strength of the prosecution's case.
He asserted that Calilung's performance underscored the credibility of the evidence presented before the Senate, acting as an impeachment court. Barbers welcomed the intense questioning, as it facilitated the emergence of truth and demonstrated that the evidence supporting the Articles of Impeachment was firmly grounded in facts.
Reiterating the prosecution's commitment to fairness and objectivity, Barbers stressed that their goal was to assist the impeachment court in reaching a decision based solely on presented evidence. He urged the public to follow the proceedings with discernment, allowing the constitutional process to unfold.
House trial spokesperson Zia Alonto-Adiong also commented on the strength of Calilung's testimony. He noted that the prosecution's choice to forgo a re-direct examination underscored the robustness of the initial testimony, as the cross-examination failed to raise any material issues requiring further clarification. According to Alonto-Adiong, the NBI witness remained firm on key points, leaving the prosecution with nothing further to rehabilitate or explain.
