Batangas: The Batangas Police Provincial Office (BPPO) took decisive action on Monday by destroying confiscated illegal firecrackers valued at over PHP735,000, aiming to ensure safer New Year's Eve celebrations across the province. This move is part of the BPPO's "Ligtas Paskuhan" campaign, which has been active since December 1.
According to Philippines News Agency, the BPPO's campaign has led to the seizure of illegal firecrackers valued at PHP415,635 from December 1 to 26, along with additional items worth PHP320,000 obtained from the Regional Intelligence Division. Acting Director Col. Jacinto Malinao, Jr., during a ceremonial destruction event, emphasized the ongoing efforts to curb illegal fireworks throughout the holiday season.
The operations have resulted in the confiscation of over 4,759 different types of illegal firecrackers, including piccolo, giant 'bawang,' whistle bombs, and other hazardous items such as the improvised cannon known as boga. Malinao highlighted that individuals are facing charges under Republic Act 7183, which regulates the manufacture, sale, distribution, and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices. He stressed the importance of obtaining permits to legally sell firecrackers in designated areas.
Despite some incidents of injuries, Malinao noted that the peace and order situation in Batangas remains stable. The BPPO continues to monitor firecracker distribution through intelligence operations and has implemented checkpoints and visibility patrols. They are also working closely with local government units and schools to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal fireworks through information campaigns and community outreach programs.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Health Office is advocating for a safe, responsible, and environmentally friendly celebration. Dr. Rosalie Masangkay, Provincial Health Officer II, warned of the serious injuries that firecrackers can cause, such as wounds and burns, and highlighted the long-term health effects that can result in loss of limb function or severe facial pain. Masangkay also pointed out the environmental damage caused by firecracker-related pollution.
