Benguet Capital Institutionalizes ‘Kadiwa’ Trade Fair

La Trinidad: The local government here announced the institutionalization of the "Kadiwa ng Pangulo" trade fair through an ordinance passed by the municipal council and approved by the mayor on May 19.

According to Philippines News Agency, Nida Organo, the municipal agriculture officer of La Trinidad, explained that the Kadiwa is locally referred to as "Pandaho-an shi La Trinidad," an Ibaloi term for selling in this capital town of Benguet. The trade fair, which started on May 20, will run daily until the end of the month at the municipal gymnasium beside the town hall. From June onwards, the event will occur on the last two days of each month.

Organo emphasized that the program aims to promote local products from farmers, organic producers, and food processors. The initiative also accepts products from other parts of the region, including mangoes from Abra and rice from Apayao, facilitated by the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera. Efforts are underway to secure a permanent space for the "pandahoan" to encourage urban farmers to participate, even with small quantities of produce.

Additionally, Organo noted that the town's Kadiwa operates separately from the provincial government's version held at the Capitol in the middle of the month. La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda highlighted that this month's Kadiwa is also part of the Farmers and Fisherfolk's Month celebration.
