BFP Lauds Collaborative Firefighting Efforts in Laoag City

Laoag city: The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Ilocos Norte praised the joint efforts of various sectors in extinguishing a significant fire that struck downtown Laoag City on Wednesday morning. "Under general alarm, we can see the full cooperation of all sectors in the firefighting response," stated Fire Superintendent Roxanne Parado, provincial fire marshal of BFP-Ilocos Norte, during a media interview.

According to Philippines News Agency, assistance came from private sector partners, including businesses, non-government organizations, and volunteer fire brigades. An initial BFP report indicated that at least eight commercial establishments were affected, including a construction supply store, a barber shop, a shoe shop, a school supplies store, a shop selling motorcycle parts, an eye clinic, and a law office.

The fire, which originated at the construction supply store around 7 a.m., was brought under control by 10:30 a.m. "As of 10:30 a.m., we have yet to declare fire out, but it is now under control," Parado noted. Fortunately, no injuries were reported except for a firefighter who sustained a minor arm injury.

Fire Senior Inspector Edison Reyes of BFP-Laoag mentioned that an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and assess the damage. In terms of preparedness, the city has installed at least 49 fire hydrants, particularly in urban areas.

Laoag City Mayor James Bryan Alcid expressed gratitude to those involved in the firefighting efforts and announced plans for an underground cabling system to eliminate overhead wires that pose fire hazards. "I extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who helped us. Rest assured that we will reciprocate your good deeds," Alcid stated.
