Dumaguete: The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) on Tuesday launched its Fire Square Roadshow at Silliman University, with the goal of educating elementary students on fire safety, preparedness, and response at an early age. BFP-Negros Island Region (NIR) director Chief Supt. Rodolfo Denaga, who served as the guest of honor, emphasized the importance of instilling fire safety consciousness and resilience among children due to the unpredictable nature of emergencies and disasters.

According to Philippines News Agency, approximately 700 pupils from Grades 1 to 6, along with their teachers, participated in the event. The roadshow featured lectures and demonstrations on crucial safety techniques such as first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, wound bandaging, and the use of fire extinguishers. Denaga noted that the roadshow will continue to visit various schools throughout the year, ensuring it does not disrupt classes, and not just during Fire Prevention Month in March.

In a related development, Fire Senior Inspector Joebert Sanao, the Dumaguete fire marshal, revealed that the BFP is in discussions with the local government to establish two additional substations. Currently, the city has only one substation located in Barangay Daro. Sanao stated that the new substations will improve the fire station's response capabilities, particularly in areas outside the city proper, although the specific locations for these substations have yet to be finalized.
