Bicol: The Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5) has implemented heightened security measures to ensure a safe, orderly, and peaceful opening of School Year 2026-2027 for students, teachers, and personnel on Monday. PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Erosito Miranda stated that as part of intensified preparations, police visibility was increased in schools, along major roads, at transportation terminals, and in other crowded areas. "This aims to immediately prevent any possible security threats and maintain order in the affected areas," he said in a statement.
According to Philippines News Agency, active traffic management operations were also conducted to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles, especially in school zones and along main thoroughfares. With partner agencies and force multipliers, authorities ensured the safe movement of students and parents during school hours and on their way home. PRO-5 personnel joined flag-raising ceremonies at various schools to demonstrate police support for and presence in the education community. Regular patrols, security inspections around schools, and close monitoring of identified areas of concern were likewise carried out.
Merlie Barba, a senior teacher at Pangilao Elementary School in Pangilao, San Miguel, Catanduanes, said that the presence of police officers during the opening of classes gives parents a sense of security and confidence. "We are thankful that they are present during the opening. Aside from providing security, they also inspired our students to study well and become police officers," she said in a phone interview. Barba added that four police officers gave a lecture on the effects of bullying and how to respond when it occurs. "It was very informative for the students. It helps us not just by providing a lecture, but by giving assurance that guidance and protection from the police are being extended to the students," she added. The police officers also provided snacks for the 60 students of the school.
Department of Education-5 information office chief Mayflor Marie Jumamil said a total of 918,279 learners have enrolled as of Monday. "We cannot say that it is final, since some enrolled students have not yet been reflected in the Learners' Information System. We are expecting an increase in the number of students," she said in an interview. According to the data, at least 853,967 learners are enrolled in public schools, 61,768 in private schools, and 2,544 in alternative learning systems.
