Bill on Postponing Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections to Become Law by August 14

Manila: The bill postponing the December 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to the following year is expected to automatically become law by August 14, as reported by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia stated that the bill is currently pending the signature of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. However, it is anticipated that there will be no formal signing ceremony, and the bill will simply lapse into law. "Based on the computation, it's Aug. 14," Garcia mentioned in an interview.

Despite the expected change in the election schedule, Garcia emphasized that preparations for the December 1 village and youth polls will continue. He expressed confidence that the legality of the postponement would likely be challenged before the Supreme Court. Garcia noted that if the bill is signed or lapses into law, the elections would be rescheduled to November 2026.

The Comelec remains committed to proceeding with its election preparations, acknowledging the possibility of judicial review. Garcia remarked, "As long as the Comelec is there, we'll just continue with the preparations. Because someone will question that in the SC."
