Antique: Antique will highlight the significance of preserving the culture of minorities with the inclusion of an Indigenous People's Day in its list of activities for the Binirayan Festival this month. Antique Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office consultant Celestino Dalumpines IV, in an interview on Thursday, said the province will gather three cultural minorities, namely Ati, Iraynon Bukidnon, and Cuyonin at the Evelio B. Javier Freedom Park in San Jose de Buenavista on Dec. 18 for a one-day celebration. 'During the IP Day, the cultural minorities in the province will have a program and fellowship,' he said.
According to Philippines News Agency, the participants will showcase their talents in singing, dancing, and storytelling, and perform rituals and play their indigenous games. The IP Day was initiated by the Offices of Sen. Loren Legarda and Rep. Antonio Agapito Legarda, who are advocates of culture and the arts in the province. 'Officials from the Philippine Sports Commission will also be coming during the IP Day to witness and have an idea about the indigenous games that they could possibly promote,' Dalumpines said.
In a separate interview, Elpedio Canja, an Iraynon Bukidnon and IP Mandatory Representative in the Municipality of Valderrama, said that they have indigenous games such as 'Kadang-kadang' or bamboo stilt game, which is an outdoor racing game. 'We also have 'bag-id' (rub back and forth) using bamboo poles to ignite a flame,' Canja said. It is not only a game, but it could also be helpful whenever there is no lighter or matchstick available when cooking, he added. 'The holding of the IP Day is important so that the young would be able to appreciate and preserve our indigenous songs, dances, and games,' Canja said.
