Bacolod: The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Negros Island Region (BJMP-NIR) has pledged to maintain strict security protocols amid persistent attempts to smuggle illegal substances into jail facilities. The commitment follows a recent incident involving a female visitor caught with shabu during an inspection at the Metro Bacolod District Jail Male Dormitory-Annex in Barangay Handumanan.

According to Philippines News Agency, Jail Chief Inspector Juniven Rey Umadhay, spokesperson for BJMP-NIR, emphasized the ongoing efforts to eliminate contraband and prevent illegal drugs from entering the facilities, ensuring safety for both jail staff and the incarcerated. "We cannot discern the brazenness of these visitors despite multiple interceptions at our gate. However, we will be ready and committed to implement all necessary security measures to thwart their illegal intentions," he stated.

The visitor, Frezel Anne Erespe, 31, was apprehended while visiting her partner, who is incarcerated for a drug-related offense. Erespe is currently detained at Police Station 10 and faces charges under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

BJMP-NIR Director Jail Chief Superintendent Brendan Fulgencio reaffirmed the commitment of the region's jail personnel to uphold security and maintain a drug-free environment. "This incident highlights the professionalism and alertness of our personnel. Their commitment plays a crucial role in safeguarding our jails and reinforcing public trust in the BJMP," he commented.

In a previous incident on December 23, a jail officer intercepted illegal drugs during a routine inspection at the Negros Occidental District Jail-Male Dormitory in Bago City. The contraband, consisting of shabu and dried marijuana leaves, was concealed inside a homemade clay stove brought by a visitor named James Diaz Jr., a resident of Barangay Sum-ag, Bacolod City.
