Mandaue city: The Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) inspected 25 seized containers loaded with illicit cigarettes, valued at approximately PHP980 million, at Gothong Wharf in Mandaue City, Cebu on Saturday.
According to Philippines News Agency, the BOC revealed that the shipment was intercepted following intelligence information provided by the NBI. These containers are part of a larger haul of 59 containers of illicit cigarettes, with a total estimated value exceeding PHP3 billion. The remaining containers are secured at various locations under government custody.
Both the BOC and NBI have announced a vigorous campaign against smuggling and illicit trade, aligning with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s whole-of-government strategy to combat smuggling and economic sabotage. BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno emphasized their firm stance on pursuing legal actions against individuals and businesses involved in such illegal activities, stating that the BOC will not entertain negotiations in these cases. He reiterated their commitment to confiscating illegal shipments and holding accountable all parties involved under the full force of the law.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag disclosed plans to formalize a memorandum of agreement with the BOC and other partner law enforcement agencies. This agreement aims to enhance intelligence sharing, joint operations, and coordinated case build-up, further strengthening their efforts against smuggling.
