Manila: Bureau of Customs (BOC) chief Ariel Nepomuceno has issued a warning to the public and stakeholders concerning individuals impersonating him and other BOC officials to solicit money for "special treatment" or expedited shipment processing.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nepomuceno highlighted reports about a solicitation scheme called "Enrollment," which promises preferential treatment to importers and brokers who pay bribes. He firmly denied any involvement in the fraudulent activity and emphasized that the BOC, under his leadership, will not tolerate extortion, bribery, or solicitation of any kind.
Nepomuceno condemned the scheme, stating that any attempt to misuse the BOC's name for personal benefit undermines the institution's integrity and will face decisive action. He announced an investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible for the scheme.
He further warned that stakeholders or individuals engaging in these fraudulent offers would be fully accountable for any repercussions, including potential criminal charges under existing laws. Nepomuceno advised strict compliance with BOC regulations and caution against such schemes.
The BOC chief urged the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious offers or solicitations to the bureau's Customer Assistance and Response Services (BOC-CARES) via hotline 8705-6000 or email at [email protected].
