Manila: The Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Monday announced the temporary removal of its online duty and tax calculator (ODTC) from its website to facilitate system improvements. Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno issued this directive and extended his apologies to actress Bela Padilla, who recently used social media to question the discrepancy in tax charges for her shipment.
According to Philippines News Agency, Padilla was charged PHP4,600 for her PHP11,000 shipment despite the ODTC indicating only PHP1,650 in taxes. Commissioner Nepomuceno explained that the current calculator does not reflect all lawful charges required by the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) and related regulations, which may lead to confusion when compared with the final assessment.
To avoid similar issues in the future, Nepomuceno has directed the removal of the calculator until enhancements are completed. The upgraded system aims to offer a more comprehensive breakdown to ensure that all applicable charges are properly reflected. The improved version of the tool will be regularly updated to mirror prevailing rates and provide the public with a clearer and more transparent picture of their total dues, in alignment with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to address public concerns effectively.
Nepomuceno emphasized the BOC's commitment to transparency, accuracy, and continuous improvement in their processes. He expressed gratitude for the public's feedback, acknowledging its role in helping the bureau serve the public better. He also appreciated Ms. Bela Padilla's calm and professional manner in raising her concerns, recognizing the importance of public feedback in enhancing government services.
