Police Step Up Cyber Patrol Against Selling of ‘Tuklaw’ in NIR

Bacolod: The Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) is intensifying monitoring operations to detect the potential online sale of illegal Thuoc Lao cigarettes, known locally as 'tuklaw,' within the region. 'We will do cyber patrolling for us to monitor if they also sell online here in Bacolod,' stated PRO-NIR Director Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay during a press conference.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PRO-NIR remains steadfast in its campaign against illegal drugs, with a particular focus on educating the youth about their harmful effects. The public is also being urged to stay alert to new types of prohibited drugs. This advisory follows a warning from Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III regarding the dangers of smoking 'tuklaw,' which could be fatal with prolonged use.

'Tuklaw' cigarettes have been identified as one of the illegal substances targeted by the PNP's anti-illegal drug campaign. PNP Drug Enforcement Group is working alongside the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Dangerous Drugs Board to gather more information about this banned substance.

According to anti-drug authorities, 'tuklaw' contains both nicotine and a synthetic cannabinoid, substances that can lead to psychotic episodes and hallucinations, producing effects similar to marijuana but considered more potent and hazardous. Thuoc Lao is a type of tobacco plant cultivated in Northern Vietnam. Traditionally, it is either smoked or chewed during rituals, with the preferred method of smoking being through a pipe known as a bamboo bong.
