Bolsonaro Begins Serving 27-Year Sentence for 2022 Coup Attempt

Braslia: Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has begun serving a 27-year and three-month prison sentence for his role in the attempted coup in 2022. The 70-year-old conservative leader, who turns 71 in March, is being held at the Federal Police Superintendence in Braslia, where he was taken into custody on Saturday after allegedly attempting to evade house arrest.

According to Philippines News Agency, the sentence was finalized by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes after Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) declared Bolsonaro's conviction 'final.' He was sentenced alongside several others identified as part of the 'first nucleus' of individuals behind the plot aimed at preventing President-elect Luiz In¡cio Lula da Silva from assuming office despite winning the October 2022 elections.
