Manila: It's all systems go for the 4th Southeast Asia Open Water Swimming Championships, presented by the Philippine Sports Commission, scheduled on Aug. 21-23 at the Boracay Newcoast. The event, organized by Philippine Aquatics Inc. in cooperation with Southeast Asia Aquatics, the province of Aklan, and various government agencies, aims to showcase athletic excellence while promoting sportsmanship, cultural exchange, and Philippine sports tourism.
According to Philippines News Agency, PAI Secretary-General Eric Buhain expressed pride in hosting the event during the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum Tuesday at the PSC media room. He emphasized the significance of open water swimming as an Olympic event. An estimated 100 to 120 swimmers from eight countries, including 35 from the Philippines, are set to compete in the 3K, 5K, and 10K events for both men and women.
Buhain highlighted the promotional aspect of the event for the country, comparing it to previous hosts like Bali and Pattaya. PSC Commissioner Fritz Gaston, PAI Vice President Jojo Quilop, and executive director Anthony Reyes were also present at the forum. Gaston praised the event for boosting the country's sports tourism program under the National Sports Tourism-Inter Agency Committee led by PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio.
The three-day event, previously held in Bali (Indonesia) and Pattaya (Thailand), also features festival races open to all swimmers, with 2km and 3km distances. PAI President Michael Vargas stated that the event not only advances the growth of open water swimming in Southeast Asia but also highlights Boracay Island's appeal while reflecting Filipino warmth and hospitality.
Buhain mentioned that Philippine Aquatics is eager to uplift open water swimming in the country. Delegates from countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia have shown interest in extending their stay in Boracay after the event. The PAI conducted tryouts on June 5-7 to select the national team members.
