Brisbane: The Australian Embassy on Wednesday welcomed the launch of direct flights between Brisbane and Cebu, saying the new route reflects Australia's intent to do more business and deepen economic engagement with the Philippines. Jetstar began its inaugural Brisbane-Cebu service on Dec. 3, marking the airline's first scheduled route to a Philippine destination outside Manila.

According to Philippines News Agency, the embassy stated that this new route will not only enhance tourism but also trade, investment, and cultural ties between the two states. Marc Innes-Brown, the Australian Ambassador to the Philippines, emphasized that this initiative is a clear demonstration of the Australian government's commitment to increasing business with the Philippines and facilitating stronger economic connections.

Innes-Brown also noted the timely introduction of this service, expressing hope that it will contribute to Cebu's recovery following the recent typhoon. The establishment of this route coincides with updated bilateral air services arrangements between Australia and the Philippines, agreed upon in September. These arrangements aim to double passenger capacity to major Australian cities from 35 to 70 weekly services by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Additionally, the two countries are working to expand traffic rights for dedicated cargo services and increase codeshare opportunities for airlines of both nations. Canberra is actively seeking to enhance trade and investment with Manila as part of its 2040 Southeast Asia Economic Strategy.
