Brownouts Loom in Luzon, Visayas Amid Tight Power Supply

Manila: Manual Load Dropping (MLD) may be implemented in parts of Luzon and the Visayas on Thursday after the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed both grids under red alert status. The red alert in the Luzon grid will be in effect from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., while the Visayas grid will also be under red alert from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., due largely to insufficient capacity to meet regulating requirements.

According to Philippines News Agency, available capacity in the Luzon grid stood at around 12,464 megawatts (MW), against a peak demand of 12,877 MW. NGCP said the MLD in the Luzon grid may be implemented until 5 p.m. in portions being served by the Baguio Electric Cooperative, Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative Inc., Isabela II Electric Cooperative, and Cagayan 1 Electric Cooperative Inc.

MLD may also be implemented until 6 p.m. in portions being serviced by the Albay Electric Cooperative Inc., Dagupan Electric Cooperation, Central Pangasinan Electric Cooperative, Pangasinan III Electric Cooperative, Batangas II Electric Cooperative Inc., Peninsula Electric Cooperative Inc., Pampanga I Electric Cooperative, Pampanga Rural Electric Service Cooperative Inc., and the Manila Electric Company.

In the Visayas, MLD may be implemented until 10 p.m. in areas served by Visayan Electric Co., Mactan Electric Company Inc., the three Cebu electric cooperatives, Negros Electric and Power Corp., Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative, Negros Oriental II Electric Cooperative, More Electric and Power Corporation, Aklan Electric Cooperative Inc., Antique Electric Cooperative Inc., Capiz Electric Cooperative Inc., and the three Iloilo electric cooperatives.

Also affected are areas served by the Guimaras Electric Cooperative, Leyte II Electric Cooperative Inc., Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative Inc., Don Orestes Romualdez Electric Cooperative Inc., Leyte III, IV, and V electric cooperatives, Eastern Samar Electric Cooperative Inc., Biliran Electric Cooperative Inc., Northern Samar Electric Cooperative Inc., Samar I and II electric cooperatives, Bohol Light Company Inc., and the Bohol I and II electric cooperatives.

"Schedule may be cancelled if system condition improves, such as if actual demand falls below projections," the NGCP said.
