Muntinlupa: The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has announced the transfer of 300 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa to the Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte. This transfer was executed on Tuesday as part of ongoing efforts to manage the population within the correctional system.

According to Philippines News Agency, Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. stated that the relocation is primarily targeted at reducing overcrowding at the NBP. This initiative is also in line with a broader strategy to prepare for the anticipated closure of the facility in 2028.

The transfer was executed with the assistance of a team of 75 corrections officers. The team comprised members of the BuCor SWAT, medical personnel, and an escort group, all led by Chief Correctional Inspector Roberto Butawan, ensuring the operation's security and efficiency.

Catapang emphasized that this move is part of broader reform efforts within the corrections system. The aim is to enhance safety and security within the facilities while implementing necessary changes for better management.

In a related effort last month, the BuCor also relocated 240 PDLs to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF), highlighting ongoing initiatives to improve conditions across the nation's correctional facilities.
