BuCor Transfers 500 Inmates to Occidental Mindoro Amid Decongestion Efforts

Manila: The Bureau of Corrections on Monday transferred 500 inmates from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City to Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Occidental Mindoro. The latest batch brings to 13,781 the total number of inmates transferred out of the crowded NBP as part of the BuCor's decongestion efforts.

According to Philippines News Agency, BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. stated that the transfer of inmates from the NBP to other prisons and penal farms across the country is in preparation for the planned closure of the national penitentiary by 2028. 'This comprehensive approach not only aims to enhance the living conditions of PDLs but also underscores the government's commitment to reforming the penal system in the country,' Catapang said.

Meanwhile, Catapang ordered all superintendents of operating prison and penal farms (OPPFs) to take necessary measures to protect lives and properties in their areas of jurisdiction in preparation for Tropical Depression Verbena.
