Camanava Police Take Action Against Fake News Ahead of Elections

Manila: The Northern Police District (NPD) has intensified its monitoring of social media platforms and online news sources to assist in combating fake news ahead of the May 12 elections. Enhanced monitoring and fact-checking are part of the multi-pronged strategy to prevent disinformation and misinformation, according to the NPD news release Sunday.

According to Philippines News Agency, NPD chief Col. Josefino Ligan emphasized the seriousness of fake news, particularly during election periods, stating that it can have significant consequences. He assured the public of the NPD's dedication to providing accurate information to help voters make informed decisions. A dedicated NPD team will be tasked with verifying information and debunking false claims.

Col. Ligan announced the formation of rapid response teams to address and counteract fake news incidents promptly, aiming to mitigate misinformation's potential impact. He also indicated that the NPD is prepared to take legal action against those deliberately spreading fake news to disrupt the electoral process.

Public awareness campaigns will be launched by the NPD, focusing on developing critical thinking skills and promoting responsible information sharing. These campaigns will be disseminated through social media, community forums, and partnerships with local media outlets.

Col. Ligan highlighted the importance of collaboration with the Commission on Elections, Department of Information and Communications Technology, media organizations, and civil society groups to ensure the success of these initiatives. He urged the public to verify information from credible sources and report suspected cases of fake news to authorities.

The NPD's jurisdiction includes the cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela, collectively known as Camanava.
