CBCP Official Applauds President Marcos’ Stand Against Corruption in SONA

Manila: An official of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) applauded the 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., particularly his pronouncement on the fight against corruption. CBCP - Episcopal Commission on Public Affairs Executive Secretary Fr. Jerome Secillano stated that it was the right time to address the issue.

According to Philippines News Agency, Secillano expressed approval for the President's commitment to tackling corruption in the legislation of the national budget and flood control projects. He noted that it was crucial for a leader to speak out on such matters, something he believes had not been done in the past.

However, Secillano mentioned that the CBCP had hoped the President would also address issues such as gambling and the related policies needed to mitigate it, as well as the situation in the West Philippine Sea.

In addition, a peace advocacy group praised Marcos' address for its clarity and directness. Dr. Jose Antonio Goitia, chairperson emeritus of Alyansa ng Bantay sa Kapayapaan at Demokrasya (ABKD), emphasized the significance of a President who openly admits to issues within the government system and takes steps to address them. He highlighted the President's acknowledgment of corruption in government projects, particularly in flood control efforts.

Goitia pointed out that projects intended to save lives had been subject to corruption for too long, with funds meant for the public being misappropriated. He commended the President for exposing these issues during the SONA, interpreting it as a sign of the President's commitment to addressing corruption.

During his address, President Marcos instructed the Department of Public Works and Highways to provide a list of flood control projects constructed since the beginning of his administration in 2022. He also called for an audit and performance review of all flood control structures to prevent corruption in infrastructure projects.

In the wake of recent heavy rains that caused flooding in parts of the country, the President visited affected areas and observed some collapsed infrastructure projects, further underscoring the need for his directives.
