Cebuanos Commemorate Rizal’s Legacy, Urge Public Servants to Embrace Patriotism

CEBU CITY: Cebuanos marked the 128th anniversary of Dr. Jose P. Rizal's martyrdom on Monday by reaffirming their commitment to his guiding principles and calling on public servants to embody the virtues of service and patriotism. The commemorative event, held at Plaza Sugbo, saw local officials and citizens alike gather to honor the national hero's enduring legacy.

According to Philippines News Agency, Councilor Rey Gealon, a notable figure in the Grand Knight of Rizal, underscored the timeless importance of Rizal's ideals during the ceremony. "We honor not only the sacrifices of our national hero but also the enduring ideals of love for country, selflessness, and courage that he passionately upheld," Gealon stated. He highlighted this year's theme, "Rizal sa Bagong Pilipinas, Buhay at Aral Aming Nilalandas," urging public servants to reflect on Rizal's teachings.

The ceremony featured a wreath-laying before Rizal's monument, with Gealon emphasizing the need for unity, resilience, and hope in the face of national challenges, echoing Rizal's vision for the Philippines. Acting Mayor Dondon Hontiveros delivered an inspirational message, stressing the significance of Rizal's values in contemporary governance. "His martyrdom stands as a powerful reminder of the price of liberty and the enduring power of patriotism. As public servants, we are called to emulate Dr. Rizal's virtues in our service to the nation," Hontiveros said.

Hontiveros, a former professional basketball player, urged Cebuano politicians to transcend partisan interests and personal ambitions, advocating instead for the greater good. "Let us foster collaboration, bridge divides, and imbue the nation with mutual respect and shared inspiration," he concluded, calling for a collective effort to uphold the principles that Rizal championed.
