Zamboanga: The Coast Guard Station (CGS)-Zamboanga activated its Deployable Response Group (DRG) on Tuesday in anticipation of the possible effects of Super Typhoon Bavi within its area of responsibility. Lieutenant Commander Vincent Bryan Marcos, head of CGS-Zamboanga, stated that the activation of the DRG ensures that response personnel, rescue equipment, and assets are on high alert for quick deployment in search-and-rescue, maritime safety, humanitarian, and disaster missions.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lieutenant Commander Marcos emphasized that the activation aligns with the Philippine Coast Guard's (PCG) commitment to public safety and maritime security. He highlighted that all substations have been instructed to maintain continuous monitoring of weather conditions, sea states, and operational readiness to ensure a swift, coordinated response to any maritime or coastal emergency.
The CGS-Zamboanga oversees eight sub-stations covering both the east and west coasts of the city. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration (PAGASA) reported that Super Typhoon Bavi is moving west-northwest at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour and is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
Marcos further stated that they are working closely with PAGASA, the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ZCDRRMO), local government units, and other partner agencies to ensure the timely dissemination of weather advisories and an effective emergency response. He urged the public to stay vigilant, monitor official weather bulletins, avoid unnecessary sea travel during inclement weather, and strictly follow directives from local authorities and emergency responders.
He also informed the public about the availability of the CGS-Zamboanga hotlines for emergencies and maritime assistance. Meanwhile, PAGASA has forecasted rain across several parts of the country on Tuesday due to the southwest monsoon, locally known as "habagat," and the easterlies. The state weather bureau indicated that the habagat is expected to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Zamboanga Peninsula, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Lanao del Norte, and Sultan Kudarat.
