ISTANBUL: China warned against US deployment of intermediate-range missiles to the Philippines, citing a significant regional security threat. "The deployment is a move to turn back the wheel of history, and it gravely threatens regional countries' security, undermines regional peace and stability," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning during a press briefing. Mao added such actions go against the common pursuit of people in the region for peace and development. "We urge relevant countries to listen to the call of countries in the region and step back from the wrong path as soon as possible," she added. The US and the Philippines have yet to issue their reactions. Response from China coincides with reports of US military equipment being withdrawn from the Philippines after joint exercises, according to a Philippine official on Thursday. In the meantime, the Philippines currently hosts a US land-based intermediate-range missile system named "Typhoon," with the military reportedly trained on its operation and maintenance. The system is anticipated to remain in the country until September. The US deployed these missiles as part of the annual joint military drills "Balikatan 2024" with the Southeast Asian archipelago in late April. Source: Philippines News Agency
