China to Maintain Tough Stance on Japan Amid Tensions Over Taiwan

Beijing: The administration of Chinese President Xi Jinping is anticipated to continue its stringent policy towards Japan this year, following a provocative statement regarding Taiwan made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi last November. The ongoing concerns about Tokyo's security policy also contribute to the unlikely prospect of improved relations between the two nations in the near future.

According to Philippines News Agency, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China's Central Committee, criticized Takaichi's remarks during a symposium held in Beijing on Tuesday. Wang emphasized that Japan's current leadership has publicly challenged China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, which has intensified tensions.

The controversy stems from Takaichi's statement on November 7 during a Japanese parliamentary meeting, where she suggested that China's potential use of force against Taiwan could pose a survival-threatening situation for Japan. This would potentially justify Japan's exercise of its right to collective self-defense.

In response to these remarks, China has taken retaliatory measures against Japan, including advising Chinese citizens against traveling to Japan and reinstating an import ban on Japanese fisheries products. China views Taiwan as a renegade province and remains committed to its objective of integrating the self-governing island with the Chinese mainland.
