Manila: The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Monday identified the Chinese Drug Triad as the organization responsible for the recent dumping of over one ton of shabu, which was found by local fisherfolk floating in the waters of Pangasinan and Ilocos Sur.
According to Philippines News Agency, PDEA Director General Isagani Nerez confirmed that the shabu packs were concealed in teabags with Chinese markings, a known signature of the triad. He explained that the triad employs various methods of drug smuggling, including using the high seas to dump illicit goods, which are then retrieved by local associates. Nerez credited "hero fishermen" for intercepting the drugs before they reached the wrong hands.
As of June 8, joint operations involving the PDEA, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Navy (PN), and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) have led to the recovery of 1,013 kg of shabu, valued at PHP6.89 billion. The discovery began on June 5 when fisherfolk found the floating shabu in several coastal areas across Pangasinan and Ilocos Sur.
The PDEA has documented a total of 39 incidents where fisherfolk and residents turned over illegal drugs. Nerez praised the coastal communities for their vigilance and integrity, stating, "The sheer volume of surrendered illegal drugs is a resounding testament to the vigilance and integrity of our coastal communities."
Nerez also lauded the bravery of the fishermen, who prioritized the country's safety over their fears, calling them "true heroes in this relentless fight against drug smuggling." The PCG and PN are continuing their patrols and retrieval missions in nearby waters, with support from local government units and coastal communities.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has ordered the immediate destruction of the recovered drugs to ensure they cannot pose a threat to public safety. Nerez emphasized that the PDEA is committed to pursuing the key perpetrators behind this transnational crime and bringing them to justice, pledging vigilance on all fronts to protect communities from illegal drugs.
