Manila: Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Northern Samar Provincial Jail (NSPJ) built a giant Christmas tree made of recyclables as part of the local government's correctional reform initiatives. Jay Keenson Acebuche, Northern Samar provincial planning and development officer, said 230 PDLs were involved in conceptualizing, crafting, and decorating the first-ever giant Christmas tree built by inmates in the province.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Christmas tree, made from recyclable materials, prominently features the Christmas wishes of the PDLs, symbolizing hope, renewal, and the positive transformation taking place within the facility. Acebuche, who is also the officer-in-charge provincial warden, noted in a phone interview that the activity was inspiring because the PDLs hung their Christmas wishes on the tree as part of a community activity.

Northern Samar 2nd district Rep. Edwin Ongchuan led the lighting ceremony on Dec. 11, 2025, at the jail compound in Dancalan village in Bobon town. Witnessing the ceremony were representatives from various national government agencies in the province.

Acebuche expressed that the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree symbolizes the bringing of hope to everyone, especially the PDLs, reminding all that even in challenging circumstances, light and renewal are possible. He added that the NSPJ continues to implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs, including spiritual formation, values education, and skills development activities, aimed at restoring dignity and preparing PDLs for a productive life beyond confinement.
