Vigan City: Cignal and Akari are set to collide in the opening game of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) on Tour, which begins at Chavit Coliseum in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. The Cignal HD Spikers are scheduled to meet the Akari Chargers at 4 p.m., marking the start of this much-anticipated tournament.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Creamline Cool Smashers, who were runners-up in the All-Filipino Conference to the Petro Gazz Angels, will face the Capital1 Solar Spikers at 6:30 p.m. PVL president Ricky Palou stated in a news release that this first leg of the PVL On Tour is more than just the beginning of a pre-season tournament; it represents the connection between the sport, the community, players, fans, and the future of the league.
Cignal has bolstered its roster with the acquisition of Erika Santos, Tine Tiamzon, and rookie Erin Pangilinan, joining the team led by Gel Cayuna, Roselyn Doria, and Ishie Lalongisip. Akari will be led by veteran players Grethcel Soltones, Ivy Lacsina, and Kamille Cal, with assistant coach Eddieson Orcullo temporarily taking over for head coach Tina Salak.
Alyssa Valdez, leading the Creamline lineup, expressed excitement about touring the Philippines and engaging with the volleyball community, while emphasizing the competition aspect of the tour. Capital1, under new coach Jorge Souza de Brito, will compete without top pick Bella Belen, who is committed to the national team. They will rely on players like Jerrili Malabanan and KC Galdones.
The PVL on Tour features 12 teams divided into two pools. Pool A includes Petro Gazz, Choco Mucho, PLDT, Galeries Tower, Farm Fresh, and Nxled, while Pool B consists of Creamline, Cignal, Akari, Capital1, Chery Tiggo, and ZUS Coffee. The tournament's format includes a single round-robin preliminaries, followed by a knockout round for the quarterfinals, leading to the semifinals and medal matches. The tournament will culminate with a title showdown, as the top teams also prepare for the PVL Invitational set for August.
