PCG Bolsters Coastal Intelligence Network to Tackle Narcotics Trade

Legazpi City: The Philippine Coast Guard-Bicol (PCG-5) has announced a significant enhancement of its coastal intelligence network, aiming to fortify maritime security and curb the influx of narcotics through regional ports. This development comes as part of a strategic alignment with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s recalibrated national drug strategy.

According to Philippines News Agency, PCG-5 Commander Commodore Ivan Roldan emphasized the agency's commitment to intensified coastal intelligence operations. He highlighted the ongoing collaboration with barangay officials, fisherfolk associations, and the broader community to bolster maritime vigilance. Commodore Roldan stated, "We are doubling our efforts to enhance our coastal intelligence operations, through coordination with barangay officials, fisherfolk associations, and enhanced community relations."

The PCG's efforts include regular checkpoints at major ports across the region, employing K-9 units and Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams to scrutinize passengers and cargo. Commodore Roldan noted that particular attention is directed towards ports with high traffic from roll-on/roll-off vessels, such as Matnog and Pilar in Sorsogon, Pioduran in Albay, and various locations in Masbate.

To further engage local communities, the PCG-5 has distributed hotline numbers to fisherfolk through its substations across the region's six provinces. Commodore Roldan explained, "We are coordinating with local villages to ensure that fisherfolk understand what to do if they see or catch something suspicious. We have resources available to assist fishermen with information."

Additionally, the PCG is working in conjunction with other anti-narcotics agencies to reinforce its initiatives against the narcotics trade. This collaborative approach aims to integrate resources and intelligence-sharing across different sectors and agencies for more effective intervention and prevention efforts.
