Classes Suspended in Zamboanga City Due to ITCZ

Zamboanga city: The city government has declared a suspension of classes on Wednesday for all levels, both private and public schools, due to inclement weather.

According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Khymer Olaso suspended classes as the city continues to experience light to moderate to at times heavy rains due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), based on the latest advisory from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). "The safety and the welfare of students and school personnel remain to be the foremost priority," Olaso said in his order. He advised the public to stay alert, especially those living in low-lying areas and near riverbanks.

Dr. Elmeir Jade Apolinario, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), announced that the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) remains on standby and is ready to respond to emergencies. Apolinario said the EOC is likewise continuously monitoring the situation in the different barangays, especially in flood-prone areas and rivers. He also urged the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees to keep monitoring the situation in their area and to take prompt action in emergencies.

Meanwhile, the Zamboanga City Water District (ZCWD) issued an advisory on Wednesday warning of low or no water pressure throughout the area. The ZCWD said low water production is caused by high turbidity, as the water level in its diversion weir has risen to 75.28 meters, which is critical and above normal. The normal level is 74.20 meters. The ZCWD advised its concessionaires to store water in anticipation of possible service interruptions.
