Coast Guard Suspends Apo Island Trips Amid Stormy Weather in Negros Oriental

Negros oriental: The Coast Guard Station in Negros Oriental has suspended boat trips to Apo Island in Dauin, Negros Oriental since 8 a.m. Friday due to stormy weather and large waves caused by the enhanced southwest monsoon. Meanwhile, some sea travel to Dapitan has already resumed.

According to Philippines News Agency, a number of trips from Negros Oriental to Siquijor and Dapitan City in Mindanao were suspended starting Thursday. However, at least four trips to Dapitan resumed by Friday afternoon. Lt. Marionne Abigail Enopia, commander of Coast Guard Station-Negros Oriental, stated that aside from the suspended Apo Island trips, other cancellations were made by shipping lines themselves for the safety of passengers and vessels.

The weather bureau issued a red rainfall warning, the highest alert, for parts of Negros Oriental early Friday. Initial reports from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office indicate that the Mayabon River in Zamboanguita, Canaway River in Siaton, and Okoy River in Valencia overflowed, making some areas temporarily impassable. In Mabinay town, several spillways were also affected by rising river waters.

Landslides and rock slides have been reported in various towns since Wednesday, leading to road closures. Approximately 200 individuals were evacuated to safer locations in Siaton, La Libertad, Bayawan City, and Canlaon City but have since returned to their homes. No casualties have been reported in Negros Oriental, although three people were rescued on Thursday in Sitio Pulo, Barangay Solongon in La Libertad after becoming trapped on an island between two rivers.
