Senator Calls on New ERC Chairperson to Focus on Consumer Protection and Electricity Cost Reduction

Manila: Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Friday urged Francis Saturnino Juan, the newly appointed chairperson of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), to focus on consumer protection and reducing electricity costs.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian expressed his confidence in Juan's leadership capabilities, recalling their previous collaboration when he chaired the Senate Committee on Energy. The senator emphasized Juan's regulatory experience and technical expertise in the energy sector as key assets for his new role.

Gatchalian highlighted the importance of a balanced and equitable approach to regulating the power sector, stressing the need to prioritize consumer interests and reduce electricity costs. He emphasized that the welfare of the public should always be at the forefront of regulatory decisions.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. appointed Juan as the new ERC chairperson effective August 8, following the resignation of outgoing chair Monalisa Dimalanta. Juan brings extensive experience to the position, having served as the president of the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines and held key roles at the ERC, including executive director and general counsel.

Juan has been a significant figure in establishing the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market and has consistently advocated for consumer protection and tariff reform.
