Comelec Initiates Preparations for First Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections Set for September 14

Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has begun preparations for the first-ever Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections (BPE) after the date was set for September 14.

According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia expressed gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Congress for their prompt action in enacting the law that fixed the election date. Garcia stated, "We thank our Honorable President and Congress for their swift action, immediately signing the fixing of the date of the Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections on September 14."

Garcia noted that all preparations by Comelec will commence now that the date has been established. The poll body is currently drafting the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) as well as the calendar of activities for the elections. He mentioned, "But we are currently drafting our Implementing Rules and Regulations, and at the same time, we are trying to fix the Calendar of Activities. Hopefully, after the Holy Week, we will be able to start the filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COC) in all 32 districts of Bangsamoro."

The Comelec chairperson also highlighted the ongoing accreditation process for regional political parties and sectoral organizations that intend to participate in the elections. The filing of COCs is targeted to begin in April, while the accreditation of parties and groups will run from April to May. "At all costs, we must finish the accreditation process because we need to have a list before the month of June begins," Garcia emphasized.

Furthermore, Garcia shared that Comelec plans to finalize precincts in June and begin printing ballots for an estimated 3.4 million to 3.5 million voters in July, ensuring that the electoral process is conducted smoothly and efficiently.
