Comelec-NIR Anticipates Low Turnout for BSKE Voter Registration

Negros island region: The Commission on Elections in the Negros Island Region (Comelec-NIR) is anticipating a minimal turnout during the voter registration period from August 1 to 10 for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).

According to Philippines News Agency, Lawyer Lionel Marco Castillano, the regional election director for Comelec-NIR, noted that this pattern is typical, particularly after the national and local elections held last May. He mentioned that they expect only about a 5 percent increase or even less in registrants, as the registration process excludes voter transfers this time.

Castillano clarified that only first-time voters aged 18, individuals aged 15 to 17 who wish to run for Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) positions, and those who failed to vote in the last two elections and want to reactivate their voting status, can register. Due to time limitations, applications for voter transfers will not be processed, as transferring voter registration is a complex procedure requiring original records from the place of initial registration.

The Election Registration Board of the poll body mandates that registration applications be submitted by August 25 for review before releasing the final voter list. Voter registration in August is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., including weekends.

Meanwhile, Castillano stated that preparations for the BSKE, initially scheduled for December 1, are ongoing, pending the final decision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro mentioned on July 10 that the President has not yet received the enrolled bill proposing the BSKE postponement and extension of officials' terms for review.
