Comelec Proclaims Alfredo Garbin Jr. as New Mayor of Legazpi City.

Legazpi City: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday officially declared Alfredo Garbin Jr. as the newly elected mayor of Legazpi City. This announcement comes after the Supreme Court confirmed the disqualification of previous mayor Carmen Geraldine Rosal. The Special City Board of Canvassers convened at the Comelec headquarters in Intramuros, Manila to formalize Garbin's proclamation. According to Philippines News Agency, Rosal, who initially won against Garbin in the May 2022 elections, was disqualified by Comelec in October 2022. The disqualification was due to her violation of the Omnibus Election Code related to the disbursement of government funds during a restricted period. Garbin expressed his hopes that the decision by the Supreme Court and Comelec en banc will bring resolution to an issue that has divided the city. He emphasized the importance of respecting the rulings made by these bodies. Garbin's term as mayor will extend until June 30, 2025. Meanwhile, Comelec chairperson George Garci a revealed that the First and Second Divisions are set to release a list of declared local nuisance candidates for the upcoming May 2025 mid-term polls. Garcia noted that nearly 300 cases are under review for potential declaration as nuisance candidates across the country. Garcia also mentioned that 47 senatorial aspirants have already been declared nuisance candidates, but they have the option to challenge this ruling before the Commission en banc. Of the 185 individuals who submitted their Certificates of Candidacy for the Senate in the previous month, 117 faced petitions questioning their candidacy. Furthermore, Garcia indicated that the poll body is prepared to receive petitions for nuisance declarations and candidacy cancellations in the Bangsamoro Parliamentary polls. The deadline for filing such petitions was five days after the conclusion of the filing period, which ended on November 9. A total of 109 candidates have submitted their COCs for parliamentary district representatives of the BARMM.
