Comelec Urges Candidates to Campaign on Platforms and Avoid Mudslinging

Baguio: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Baguio has called on candidates in the upcoming elections to center their campaigns on presenting their platforms and to refrain from engaging in mudslinging.

According to Philippines News Agency, lawyer John Paul Martin, the Comelec-Baguio officer, emphasized in a phone interview that politicians should focus on promoting their own agendas and the benefits they can offer voters, rather than disparaging their opponents. He noted that many voters are more interested in hearing about the plans candidates have and what they can provide if elected, rather than negative remarks about other candidates.

Martin highlighted that voters now prefer to listen to constructive plans instead of damaging statements aimed at fellow candidates. He pointed out that after the elections, politicians, regardless of the outcome, remain part of the close-knit community of Baguio. Therefore, campaigning without harming the reputation of opponents is advisable.

He further remarked that candidates might even share familial ties, and attacking fellow candidates could lead to familial discord, which undermines the essence of the elections. Martin also observed that many voters have evolved into thinking and intelligent individuals who prioritize development.
