Manila: The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Tuesday urged private companies to adopt measures to lessen the effects of sweltering temperatures in workplaces. Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma asked employers to comply with Labor Advisory No. 08-2023.

According to Philippines News Agency, Laguesma reiterated the appeal for employers to protect the health and safety of their workers by adhering to the advisory. He emphasized the importance of proactive and preventive measures, noting that such actions are preferable to reactive responses, even before the official onset of the summer season.

Laguesma highlighted the necessity of implementing these measures to maintain safety for employees and ensure the smooth operation of companies. Under the guidelines, DOLE mandates effective ventilation and heat insulation in all work areas and advises adjustments in rest breaks or work locations to help workers recover from heat exposure.

The guidelines also recommend that companies provide temperature-appropriate uniforms and personal protective equipment, including hats, goggles with UV protection, and comfortable, lightweight long-sleeve t-shirts. Additionally, the provision of free and adequate drinking water is required.

Private companies are encouraged to conduct workplace assessments and run information and advocacy campaigns to educate employees on the symptoms of heat stress and appropriate responses. Establishing procedures and information networks to address heat-related emergencies is also advised.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has projected that the heat index across many regions in the country will range from 27 to 46 degrees Celsius.
